As Guyanese celebrate Diwali, the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) is urging the nation to look beyond the festival's traditional celebrations and reflect on whether the values of justice, dignity, equality and mutual respect are being practised in everyday life.

In its Diwali message, the GTUC said the Festival of Lights must inspire more than ceremonial expressions of unity, arguing that the true measure of national progress lies in how citizens are treated, the protection of their rights and the fairness of opportunities available to all.

“The light we kindle in our homes must also shine in our workplaces, communities, institutions and national conduct,” the Congress said, calling on citizens and leaders to reject discrimination, intolerance and practices that undermine the well-being of others.

It also stressed that every worker and citizen, regardless of race, religion, political affiliation or economic circumstances, deserves dignity, respect and an opportunity to participate meaningfully in shaping the country's future.

AFC: Progress must reach every community

The Alliance for Change (AFC) is calling for greater inclusion, accountability and fairness in the distribution of Guyana's growing national wealth, saying the benefits of development must reach every community and household.

In its message, the party said Diwali's enduring triumph of light over darkness and hope over despair carries important lessons for the country's development.

It outlined three commitments for Guyanese to reflect on: unity of purpose, good governance and prosperity for all.

The AFC said national unity must be built on equal opportunities and a sense of belonging for every citizen, while public leadership must be guided by transparency, accountability and integrity.

It also called for Guyana's oil and natural resource wealth to translate into tangible improvements in people's lives through better opportunities, stronger communities and a higher quality of life.

“Even the smallest flame can dispel darkness,” the party said, expressing hope that the festival would inspire compassion, understanding and a collective commitment to building a more inclusive Guyana.

PPP: Diwali celebrates Guyana's cultural diversity

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) extended greetings to Guyanese, particularly members of the Hindu community, describing Diwali as a cherished expression of the country's rich cultural and religious heritage.

The party said the festival's traditions, lights and celebrations reflect the respect for diversity that enriches Guyana and provide an opportunity for communities to recognise the bonds that unite them.

It noted that Diwali's message of hope, renewal, truth and righteousness resonates beyond religious boundaries.

The PPP expressed hope that the celebration would bring peace, happiness and harmony to households while encouraging greater compassion and understanding among Guyanese.

All three organisations extended Diwali greetings and wished those celebrating a peaceful and joyous festival.

ERC: Diwali offers lessons in tolerance, understanding and unity

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is encouraging Guyanese to embrace the values of knowledge, compassion and tolerance as they celebrate Diwali, highlighting the festival's role in strengthening understanding and harmony across the country's diverse communities.

In its Diwali message, the Commission said the Festival of Lights represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, while offering an opportunity for spiritual renewal, reflection and personal growth.

The ERC noted that Diwali has become a cherished part of Guyana's national heritage, celebrated and appreciated by people of different cultural and religious backgrounds.

It said the festival serves as a reminder that cultural and religious differences enrich the country's national identity, while shared aspirations for peace, respect and progress unite its people.

“The light celebrated in every home and community can also serve as a symbol of the understanding, tolerance and harmony that we must continue to nurture as a nation,” the Commission said.

The ERC wished the Hindu community and all Guyanese a safe, joyful and blessed Diwali, expressing hope that the occasion would strengthen the bonds that unite the nation.
