Pupils of Kurupukari Primary School in Region Eight will celebrate Diwali for the first time on Saturday, with a motorcade and cultural evening from 7pm.
Head Teacher Quado Vancooten said the community invited residents with vehicles to take part in the motorcade. Many pupils have only heard of motorcades, and will now see one first-hand.
The motorcade will be followed by the cultural evening, where boys and girls will dance to popular Indian songs and showcase cultural wear. The clothing was donated by Kenard Sahadeo of Payless, while teachers taught the dance routines.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. In Guyana, it is a public holiday marked by prayers, the lighting of diyas (clay oil lamps), sweets and cultural programmes.
Though rooted in Hindu tradition, the festival has broad appeal across the country, with Guyanese of all ethnic and religious backgrounds joining in. The Kurupukari event reflects that spirit, as the Indigenous community comes together to celebrate a festival with roots far beyond the village.
