Amir Jangoo pulled West Indies out of early trouble as the visitors finished in a strong position at the end of the first day against Bangladesh in Sylhet. Bad light stopped play twice before ending the day at 4:08pm local time.
Jangoo's second Test century, in his 10th innings, formed the backbone of their 235 for 4 at stumps. He remained unbeaten on 111 off 171 balls with 11 fours and two sixes, the second of which took him to the three-figure mark during the third session.
Jangoo added 131 for the fourth wicket with debutant Kevin Wickham, who made 61 off 145 balls. He then shared an unbroken 77-run stand for the fifth wicket with Justin Greaves, unbeaten on 35.
West Indies suffered several blows early in the morning, even before the match started. They lost John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul to viral fever, which required them to send Joshua Da Silva to open the innings for the first time in his Test career.
Taskin Ahmed made life a little more difficult when he bowled Brandon King, flattening his middle and leg stumps, in the fifth over. Mahmud responded with the wicket of Kavem Hodge in the next over, after troubling him with a series of deliveries. Hodge left a ball on length that clipped his off bail. Taskin then removed Da Silva for 12, trapping him lbw with an inducker.
Jangoo hardly allowed Bangladesh back into the game, playing well-timed drives and pulls. Wickham was more proactive after lunch, going after Taskin, while Jangoo continued to attack at his end.
Jangoo started the second session with a flat-batted pull off Taskin, before launching Nayeem Hasan for a powerful six over midwicket. In the same Nayeem over, Wickham also reached his half-century.
Desperate for a breakthrough, Mahmud went on a short-ball barrage against the two batters, even inducing a caught-and-bowled chance off a miscued pull shot. Mahmud, though, could not hold the chance with Jangoo on 68.
But after a few overs of regular short balls, Mahmud bowled a full one angled in from over the wicket, which Wickham missed and was bowled.
Greaves started confidently by breaking a 45-ball boundary duck with a straight drive off Mahmud. Jangoo continued his flow after tea as well, carting Taijul, Taskin and Mehidy Hasan Miraz for boundaries.
He reached his century in grand style, blazing Taijul over wide long-off for his second six. Play was then stopped twice, the first time for 35 minutes and the second with 22 minutes left of scheduled play. (Cricinfo)
