The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has awarded a $118 million contract to B&J Civil Works for the first phase of the Blue Water Shipping Stadium at D'Urban Park.
The contract was signed on Tuesday at the GFF Secretariat in the presence of GFF President Wayne Forde, GFF Second Vice-President Rawlston Adams, GFF General Secretary Pushpargha Chattopadhyay and B&J Civil Works Chief Executive Officer Beverly Tapp.
The tender was advertised on August 27 and drew bids from six contractors. B&J Civil Works was selected after an evaluation by the GFF's Tender Management Consultant, and construction is scheduled to begin on November 10.
Phase 1 covers general site development, two grassroots mini-pitches with bleachers, floodlighting, male and female dressing rooms and washrooms, a security station, perimeter fencing, bridge and culvert works, and the main entrance and access works.
Forde described the project as a significant investment in the future of football. "Investing in modern football infrastructure is fundamental to the long-term growth and sustainability of our sport," he said. "We are building a facility that will serve our football, attract international competitions and create lasting opportunities for future generations."
He added that the project also aligns with President Dr Irfaan Ali's vision of positioning Guyana as a regional hub for sports tourism.
Both FIFA and Concacaf are supporting the project. FIFA has provided design and engineering oversight, while Concacaf has carried out a technical evaluation and advised on the stadium's operational requirements to meet the confederation's standards for hosting international matches.
Beyond the main facility, the two mini-pitches will support the FIFA Football for Schools (F4S) programme, which was established under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022 between FIFA, the GFF and the Government of Guyana. The pitches will give schools and nearby communities safe, modern spaces for football activities.
Once completed, the stadium is expected to hold about 10,400 spectators and will be the home of the senior men's and women's national teams, the Golden Jaguars and the Lady Jags. It will also host international matches, GFF Elite League fixtures, concerts, exhibitions and cultural and public events.
