Four Police ranks stationed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station have been arrested over the death of Gavin Douglas, 32, a labourer.

The ranks are in custody at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) as the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) investigates the circumstances of Douglas's death.

Douglas, of Crane, West Coast Demerara, and Recht-Door-Zee, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was the subject of a post-mortem examination on Monday.

Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh determined the cause of death to be brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma. Two Taser studs were removed from the body and lodged as exhibits.

The body was handed over to relatives for burial.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said it is treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and will ensure a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation.

The Force said it remains committed to accountability and the rule of law, and will take appropriate action against any rank found culpable, in accordance with the law.
Investigations are continuing.
