Venezuela's potential economic recovery could open new commercial opportunities for Guyanese businesses, particularly in agriculture, construction and logistics, former Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Kingdom Vanessa Neumann has said.
Keynote speaker at the recently concluded World Trade Centre Georgetown International Trade and Investment Conference 2026, Neumann said Venezuela's evolving political and economic circumstances could create opportunities as the country addresses its reconstruction and development needs.
She identified food supplies, logistics, construction, maintenance and technical services as areas where Guyanese companies could potentially find new markets.
However, she cautioned that businesses must carefully assess the risks before pursuing commercial opportunities in the neighbouring country.
“Commercial access should not be confused with political legitimacy or institutional certainty,” Neumann warned, urging Guyanese companies to ensure that transactions are lawful, buyers are credible and payment arrangements are dependable.
She also encouraged businesses and policymakers to monitor developments in official policy, maritime activity, border conditions and insurance arrangements.
Her comments come as Guyana continues to pursue economic diversification and opportunities to expand trade beyond traditional markets.
Neumann expressed hope that Venezuela's recovery would benefit both countries, noting that “a neighbour's recovery need not come at Guyana's expense.”
The former ambassador also emphasised the importance of resolving differences through international law, while encouraging businesses to approach the evolving situation with both commercial ambition and caution.
Her presentation examined the wider geopolitical and economic developments that could influence Guyana's investment climate, including the implications of the conflict involving Iran for international trade, energy markets and shipping.
The conference brought together business leaders, investors, policymakers and international delegates to examine opportunities for expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation in Guyana and the wider region.
