A childhood dream sparked by a visit to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court has culminated in a major milestone for Sarika Sabrina Ghaness, who has been admitted to the Bar after years of academic pursuit, motherhood and determination.
In her admission speech titled “A Delayed Dream is Not a Defeated Dream,” Ghaness reflected on the journey that took her from Essequibo to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, where she completed her Legal Education Certificate in 2026.
Her ambition to enter the legal profession began in 2001, when a visit to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court inspired her to become a magistrate.
Although the journey took longer than she initially envisioned, she continued to pursue her education while building a family and meeting other responsibilities.
“Motherhood is not the end of ambition, marriage is not the end of independence, and age is certainly not the end of opportunity,” she said.
Ghaness, who is the wife and mother of three boys, first completed studies in Sociology and Supervisory Management at the University of Guyana's Institute of Distance and Continuing Education in 2009, graduating with distinction.
She later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with distinction in 2020, followed by a Bachelor of Laws degree, also with distinction, in 2024.
Her legal studies eventually took her to Trinidad and Tobago to complete her professional training at Hugh Wooding Law School.
In reflecting on her achievement, Ghaness expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the support of her mother, husband, three sons, mother-in-law, brothers, friends and study partners throughout the journey.
“I accept admission to the Bar with profound gratitude and humility,” she said.
Her achievement is a reminder that personal ambitions need not be abandoned because of time, family responsibilities or the challenges encountered along the way.
