One Communications has shut down its 2G network nationwide, ending service for customers with 2G-only devices, who can claim free SIM upgrades and replacement handsets until December 31.

The shutdown was carried out in five phases, starting on May 14, with the final phase completed in October. It covered network sites in Georgetown, East Coast Demerara, West Demerara, East and West Coast Berbice, Essequibo and some hinterland communities.

Customers with compatible 3G or 4G LTE devices and SIM cards generally need to take no action, the company said. Those upgrading their SIM cards can keep their existing mobile numbers.

One Communications Guyana Chief Executive Officer Abraham Smith said retiring the older technology allows the company to focus its resources on its LTE network, which supports faster data speeds and greater capacity.

“The transition forms part of our wider network modernisation programme, aimed at strengthening network performance, expanding capacity and meeting the growing demand for reliable mobile voice and data services,” Smith said.

The company previously reported a 28 per cent increase in mobile data traffic and a 23 per cent rise in average data consumption per customer. It has also upgraded capacity at 35 mobile sites.

Customers unsure whether their devices are compatible can visit a One Communications store, call Customer Support on 0663 or use the eligibility checker at https://onecommgroup.com/gy/2g-decommissioning/.

The company said its migration programme began more than a year ago and included direct calls, text messages, public notices and targeted outreach.
