Bangladesh fought back with three late wickets but West Indies held the edge when rain and bad light brought an early end to the second day's play in Mirpur. After bowling out Bangladesh for 272, West Indies reached 134 for 4, trailing the hosts by 138 runs.

West Indies were propped up by left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican's 5 for 53 and later John Campbell's half-century but Taijul Islam's twin strikes got Bangladesh back in the contest.

Shortly after the rain break in the final session, Mehidy got the set Campbell with a fine delivery, but Najmul Hossain Shanto's excellent reflex catch was the bigger talking point. The opener poked at a delivery slanted across him and got a thick outside edge to slip, where the Bangladesh captain leapt to his left and grabbed a stunner. It was the breakthrough Bangladesh were looking for, after Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul had added 61 runs for the second wicket.

Taijul then struck twice in the same over. Mominul Haque, fielding at silly mid-off, bent really low to intercept Kavem Hodge's defensive push, and then Amir Jangoo swung one down to deep square-leg where Tanzid Hasan took a simple catch. West Indies slipped from 90 for 1 to 97 for 4, giving away a strong start.

But Chanderpaul and Justin Greaves held the innings together, adding an unbroken 37-run stand before umpires called off play around 4:35pm local time. Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 43 with six fours while Greaves reached 15 off 22 balls.

The day was also all about Bangladesh's implosion in the morning session, when they lost their last five wickets for only 19 runs as they slipped from 253 to 5 to be bowled out for 272. They scored just 59 runs and lost seven wickets in the opening session after resuming the second day on a comfortable 213 for 3. Left-arm spinners Warrican and debutant Joshua Bishop formed an unlikely partnership, picking up seven Bangladesh wickets.

Bishop started the slide with Shadman Islam's wicket, shortly after the left-hander reached his third Test century. Towhid Hridoy lasted two balls in the morning session, after he returned to the crease after retiring hurt on the first evening. Hridoy played a poor shot to Bishop's full ball, slamming into his stumps.

Warrican then got one to spin through Mehidy's defensive press, before Shamar Joseph took the wickets of Nayeem and Mahmud in quick succession. The innings ended when Warrican removed Taijul Islam and Shoriful off successive balls, as Bangladesh collapsed in a heap.

West Indies started their reply with a few boundaries but also had the rub of the green going their way. Campbell had two lives, first on 5 when Nayeem Hasan dropped him at point and then on 22, when Shoriful Islam missed a return catch.

Brandon King fell to a Hasan Mahmud delivery that wobbled away from him, with substitute wicketkeeper Jaker Ali doing the rest.

Campbell drove the ball at most opportunities, while Chanderpaul struck a couple of early fours in his innings. Shortly after Campbell struck Mehidy for a six and a four off successive deliveries, bad light forced an early end to the second session. (Cricinfo)
