We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) says it has received no further communication from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on resuming talks between the two opposition groups, nearly two months after their last meeting.
WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus said APNU leader Aubrey Norton had contacted her by phone to propose another meeting but did not indicated a date and time.
“To the best of my knowledge, we have not had a meeting or indications of need for a meeting thereafter,” Primus told a WIN press conference.
She said she had also received no further communication from APNU’s general secretary.
“I have not received any follow-up calls, nor have I received any emails, text, anything at all from the General Secretary of that party,” Primus said.
Despite the lack of contact, Primus said she did not believe the delay reflected animosity between the parties. She suggested that competing priorities on WIN’s side may have contributed, while noting that APNU had not indicated when the groups might meet again.
“I do not have any concerns to the effect that either parties are not inclined to meet if it becomes necessary,” she said.
The lack of further engagement follows an earlier agreement by WIN and APNU to consider establishing a six-member team, with three representatives from each party, to develop guidelines for future discussions.
The proposal has yet to be finalised. WIN is expected to consult its leadership and membership before deciding whether to participate, while APNU is to consult the other parties in its coalition before selecting its representatives.
At their previous meeting, the two sides discussed matters relating to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the impasse at the Region Ten Regional Democratic Council and nominations to the Local Government Commission. No final decisions were reached on those issues.
