First Lady Arya Ali on Wednesday commissioned Guyana’s 18th and largest recreational park at No. 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice, as part of her National Beautification Project, creating a new space for recreation, sports and tourism.
The facility is designed to provide a family-friendly environment for residents and visitors while opening opportunities for vendors, small businesses and entrepreneurs in surrounding communities.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Ali reflected on the beach’s historical and sentimental significance, noting that it has long been a popular destination for Guyanese families seeking relaxation and recreation.
“For generations, No. 63 Beach has held a special place in the hearts of Guyanese. Many of us have fond memories of travelling near or far with our families to fly our kites, to enjoy the sea breeze, spend time with loved ones, or simply escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” she said.
However, Ali noted that despite its natural beauty and popularity, the beach previously lacked the amenities needed to realise its full potential.
The new park features a secured children’s play area, gazebos, washing facilities, walking paths, seating, lighting and vending kiosks. It also includes dedicated spaces for volleyball and football, providing opportunities for exercise and organised sporting activities.
Ali said the development was intended to improve residents’ quality of life and encourage stronger community connections, while creating economic opportunities for people involved in vending and other small businesses.
She urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining the facility and protecting its amenities.
“This park belongs to you. While we celebrate its completion today, its lasting success will depend on how well we care for it tomorrow,” she said, encouraging the public to respect the facilities and help preserve the park.
Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill called on residents and stakeholders to work together to establish No. 63 Beach as a major tourism destination capable of attracting visitors from across Guyana and overseas.
“This 63 Beach Park and facilities here must become a must visit for everyone who visits Guyana,” Edghill said.
He said the facility should serve not only as a recreational space but also as a sports venue and family attraction, strengthening the beach’s appeal to both local and international visitors.
Edghill also highlighted the involvement of small and medium-sized contractors from Berbice in the construction of the park, saying their participation helped build the capacity of local businesses and create employment opportunities.
The development is expected to position No. 63 Beach as a more attractive destination for families and tourists while supporting local enterprise and expanding recreational opportunities in the region.
