Mechanical engineer Davion Mars maintained his perfect record in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League with a fifth-round win over Ryan McKay on Monday.
The game was played at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown. The competition resumed after a break for the Chess Olympiad, and Mars entered the round as tournament leader and favourite.
Mars played aggressively from the opening but lost a pawn by move 14 after several miscalculations. Computer analysis later showed McKay held a significant advantage, with Mars's position rated at about minus two.
On move 19, McKay made a tactical error that allowed Mars to win a knight through a discovered attack. McKay resigned 16 moves later, giving Mars his fifth consecutive victory.
Mars leads the standings alone on five points from five games.
Keron Sandiford is second on four points after beating Odinnie Reece. Chess coach Oluwadare Oyeyipo is third on 3.5 points after defeating Raymond Sookdeo.
Jaden Taylor climbed three places to fifth with a win over Woman Candidate Master Jessica Callender.
With two rounds remaining, Mars remains in control of the title race, with Sandiford and Oyeyipo the closest challengers.
The sixth round is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at the Pegasus Hotel.
The Pegasus Weekly Chess League is presented by Drayton's Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation.
