Students can now access seven channels on a mobile app, as the Education Ministry's Distance Education Unit (DEU) launched EdPAL Plus and a two-week media training programme for youths.
DEU Head Phillip Williams said the upgraded platform introduces new features, smoother operations and greater access to information from the Ministry.

“We are particularly proud of the integration of the television, the learning channel aspect of it. Now, for the first time, the EdPAL Plus app can access the seven channels right in the palm of your hands,” Williams said.

The upgrade forms part of the Ministry's broader digital transformation agenda and supports efforts to make educational resources more accessible, including to students in hinterland and riverine communities.

The original EdPAL platform was launched in September 2023 to address a scheduling challenge in which instructional radio programmes clashed with classroom contact hours. It allows students to access learning content outside the classroom and revisit lessons when needed.

Williams said the unit continues to focus on helping students prepare for assessments and progress through the grades, and provides additional resources for teachers and parents.
The launch also introduced the Media Mentorship Programme, which will give participants hands-on experience in photography, videography, pre-production, video editing and audio production.
DEU Production Manager Jonathan Jacobus said the programme draws on the experience of the unit's media professionals, including those at the Guyana Learning Channel and Edu-FM.
Participants will receive theoretical instruction alongside practical training facilitated by DEU members.

Education Ministry Chief Planning Officer Mischka White-Griffith encouraged the participants to look beyond the technical skills they will acquire and consider the impact of their work.
“Once you understand your impact, then the way you will approach the two weeks ahead of you will shape and determine the rest of your life,” White-Griffith said.
She urged the young people to take advantage of the opportunities available, noting that Guyana now has resources to invest in areas that previously received less support.
