Progress on the US$604 million Palmyra-to-Moleson Creek four-lane highway expansion remains uneven, with Lots 1 and 3 advancing slower than planned while Lot 2 is about 27 per cent complete.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Mandalall Ramraj made the disclosure during a site visit on Tuesday, when he inspected works along the Corentyne corridor and met contractors and utility agencies.

“Lot 1 and Lot 3 are not progressing the way we have wanted it. But Lot 2 is progressing significantly. We are about 27 per cent job completed. We should have been about 29 per cent,” Ramraj said.

He said he met representatives of the contractors, Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and GT&T to address issues affecting construction.
“Those corrective measures will be put in place so that we can continue to accelerate the work,” he said.

Ramraj said paving was visible at several sections of Lot 2 and expressed confidence that the works could be completed on time.
The slower progress on Lots 1 and 3 is linked to outstanding financial arrangements with the government, he said.

“Palmyra, Lot 1 and Lot 3, they have some, they are not able to conclude their financial aspect of the project, while they made some progress but it has to be concluded and as soon as that is concluded, we will see an acceleration of these two lots,” he said.

The project covers the corridor from the Canje Bridge to Moleson Creek and is divided into three lots.

Lot 1 runs from the Canje Bridge to Johns, while Lot 3 extends from Number 55 Village to Moleson Creek. Both are being undertaken by Vishwa Samudra Engineering under a design, build and finance framework.

Lot 2 runs from Bloomfield to Number 54 Village and is being executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
Ramraj said the overall project is expected to be completed by 2028.
