Thirteen cancer survivors each received $100,000 in direct financial support from Recover Guyana and its partners at the launch of its Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities on Friday.

Each survivor also received a $35,000 dental voucher from Flawless Dental GY and a $20,000 voucher from S&K Imports GY.

The event, held at Maharaja Palace, honoured Deborah Johnson-Jones, Judy Bayley, Zoreen Alli Outar, Hermanetta Andrews, Trudy Cummings, Roneta Williams, Lakshmin Narayan, Sarita Halim, Sremala Churaman, Chandrawattie Samaroo, Sylvia Dias, Chandrattie Singh and Nalini Boodanrine.

It marked the fifth consecutive year that Recover Guyana has partnered with One Communications for Pinktober.

Recover Guyana said this year's campaign message is that awareness must go beyond wearing pink and translate into action. It said the national conversation on breast cancer should place greater focus on early detection, access to screening, survivor wellbeing and sustained community support.

The organisation also provided financial support to The Lotus Cancer Initiative Inc. for its screening activities during the month.

Recover Guyana said civil society and the private sector can complement national efforts by expanding awareness, mobilising resources and ensuring survivors and patients feel supported throughout their journeys.

The organisation will take part in the Youths on the Rise Guyana Cancer Awareness Walk on October 11, followed by World Food Day activities and a healthy basket drive for cancer patients on October 16.

It will also join the OnePinktober Walk/Run on October 25 and close the month on October 31 with PINKSunflower – The Conversation with Survivors, where survivors will share their experiences, challenges and messages of hope.

Recover Guyana thanked One Communications, Flawless Dental GY, S&K Imports GY and other supporters.
"Behind every pink ribbon is a person, a family and a story," the organisation said.
