A Guyanese food manufacturer has taken another step into the Middle Eastern market, shipping its first commercial container of products to a major retailer in Qatar.

UMAMI Incorporated dispatched the shipment to LuLu Hypermarket following the brand’s launch in Doha in September, the company announced in an October 1 release.

Established in 2013, the company produces sauces, seasonings and condiments and is seeking to establish regular exports to Qatar and the wider Gulf region.

Managing Director Chris Persaud said the shipment was a proud moment for the company and its workers.

“There is a special sense of pride in seeing a container leave Guyana knowing that what is inside was manufactured here, by Guyanese people, and will ultimately carry our country’s name onto international supermarket shelves,” Persaud said.

He said the company intends to build a long-term relationship with LuLu through consistent product quality and reliable supply.

LuLu Group Global Director Dr. Mohamed Althaf welcomed the partnership, saying the retailer would provide a platform for UMAMI’s products to reach consumers in Qatar.

Guyana’s Ambassador to Qatar, Safraaz Ahmad Shadood, said the embassy’s economic diplomacy helped secure market access for Guyanese-made goods. He encouraged other manufacturers capable of meeting the requirements for Middle Eastern markets to pursue similar opportunities.

UMAMI said entering overseas markets requires manufacturers to meet regulatory, food safety, production and packaging standards.

President Irfaan Ali also welcomed the shipment, pointing to the need to turn Guyana’s growing international relationships into increased trade.

“We have worked deliberately to build the bridges between Guyana, Qatar and the wider Gulf region; the task before our private sector now is to increase the traffic across those bridges,” Ali said.

He said processed-food exports could create opportunities for farmers and workers while supporting Guyana’s manufacturing sector.

The shipment comes as Guyana observes Agriculture Month, with UMAMI aiming to develop a sustainable export programme for its locally manufactured products.

The company has not disclosed the shipment’s value, the quantity of products exported or the expected arrival date.
