A 58-year-old security guard was remanded to prison on Friday after being charged with attempted murder for allegedly setting his 59-year-old wife on fire at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast.

Munesh Ramnarine of Hampton Court was charged with attempt to commit murder, contrary to Section 103(c) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. The charge relates to an incident on Thursday, October 1.

Ramnarine appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Anna Regina Magistrate's Court, where the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The matter was adjourned to November 17.

Police said the woman was attacked at her home at about 12:30pm on Thursday.

Her screams reportedly alerted a nearby resident, who rushed to her aid and extinguished the flames.

She was taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where she was admitted with burns and other injuries. Her condition is said to be stable.
