Stronger artificial intelligence (AI) safety systems, regional cooperation and investment in skilled personnel must match the rapid growth of Guyana's aviation sector.
President Dr Irfaan Ali made the call on Tuesday at the opening of the ICAO-EASA Third Global RSOO and RAIO Forum at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
Dr Ali urged that AI become a central part of global aviation safety discussions, noting that the sector is undergoing major technological change.
“We cannot leave today to discuss aviation safety and not have AI, the consequences of AI and importance of AI on the agenda. Your agenda, I believe, must be able to lead your discussion towards an AI strategy for the aviation sector, especially as it relates to safety, issues of regulations, adaptability, equity, and integration,” he told aviation leaders.
He also urged an expert group to examine AI and aviation safety urgently.
“If you don't have equity in the buildout of AI in the aviation sector, especially for safety, then you will have a disparity. You will have unevenness. You will have different rules, and you will have countries being left behind,” he said.
Dr Ali said Guyana's aviation sector has expanded sharply over the past five years, creating a greater need for trained aviation professionals.
He said Guyana is positioning itself as a global hub for training and development in aviation safety, security, maintenance and pilot training, and is seeking an international partner to support that vision.
Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar said the vision is to make Guyana a regional aviation and safety hub and improve connectivity. He added that the plan includes full compliance with recommended practices and applying lessons learned from the past and from partners.
Guyana Civil Aviation Authority Director General Lieutenant Colonel (Ret'd) Egbert Field said passenger numbers and cargo carriage have quadrupled since 2020, with passenger movements surpassing one million.
He said international passenger traffic has increased significantly as Guyana expands airport infrastructure and strengthens its aviation safety capacity.
