Police are investigating three armed robberies reported within roughly an hour on Friday night across Georgetown and both sides of the Demerara River, with two men now in custody in connection with one of the incidents.

The robberies included one in which a security officer was held at gunpoint and relieved of his nine-millimetre pistol and ten rounds of ammunition.

There is no indication from police that the three incidents are connected.

The latest occurred at about 8:30 p.m. at a bar on North Road, Georgetown, where a 40-year-old security officer from East La Penitence was on duty.

Police said a man known to the security officer approached him, allegedly pointed a handgun at him and demanded his firearm.

The officer complied, handing over a nine-millimetre pistol along with ten matching rounds of ammunition.

The suspect then left on foot and was last seen heading south along Wellington Street. No arrest has been made.

About ten minutes earlier, a 35-year-old businessman from Peters Hall was robbed while walking with a friend along a street in Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara.

According to police, two men approached on a black motorcycle before the pillion rider dismounted and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the businessman.

The victim was relieved of a dark blue iPhone 14 Plus and 10,000 dollars in cash.

The attacker then returned to the motorcycle and the pair escaped.

Police subsequently conducted checks in the area and arrested two labourers, ages 24 and 22, both from Industrial Site, Ruimveldt.

The men were taken to the Providence Police Station, where they remain in custody as investigations continue.

Several people have also been questioned and police reviewed CCTV footage from the area.

Earlier that evening, between 7:30 and 8 p.m., two Cuban nationals, ages 41 and 29, were robbed after boarding a silver-grey motorcar to travel to Wales.

The two factory workers were travelling through Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, when police said a man who was seated in the front passenger seat allegedly pulled out a handgun and demanded their belongings.

The victims were robbed of two cellphones, a wristwatch, a wallet and a total of 8,000 dollars in cash.

They were then ordered out of the vehicle before the suspects drove away.

Police said CCTV cameras were identified in the Stanleytown area and the footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

No arrests have been made in the North Road or Stanleytown robberies.

Investigations into all three incidents are continuing.
