Travellers flying through the New York area could face delays and cancellations as a powerful nor’easter brings heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding to the United States East Coast.

Flights at New York’s three major airports could be disrupted, while several airlines have waived change fees for eligible passengers as the storm moves through the region.

New York and New Jersey have declared states of emergency, with authorities warning of flooding, power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

Rail travel could also be affected, with Amtrak warning passengers of possible disruptions to services in the Northeast.

The severe weather has already forced the cancellation or postponement of several major events, including the Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park and Ed Sheeran concerts near Boston.

Authorities are urging residents and travellers to monitor conditions as the nor’easter affects parts of the East Coast through the weekend.
