The sod has been turned for a new $1.3 billion market at Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara, expected to accommodate more than 90 vendors in a modern, secure trading facility.

The Wednesday ceremony marked the start of construction on a project designed to improve trading conditions, enhance accessibility and provide a comfortable environment for vendors and shoppers alike. It is a significant upgrade for the area, where approximately 54 vendors currently operate along the reserve and on the streets within the Zeelugt community.

The facility will include a dedicated children's play area, administrative offices and training facilities, parking for vendors and customers, and a designated taxi bay. Vendor stalls will be organised into designated sections for meat and fish, fresh produce, prepared foods, and beauty and personal care products, alongside modern washroom facilities, an integrated waste management system and comprehensive security measures.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand said the market will help create improved social and economic conditions for vendors and easier access for residents. She noted that sod-turning ceremonies for markets in Port Mourant, La Penitence, Lusignan, Soesdyke, Skeldon, McKenzie and Plaisance are expected before the end of the year, alongside work to restore and extend the Stabroek Market and build a new Bourda Market.

"A market is a place of community. It's a place that encourages economic growth. It's a place that fosters creativity and entrepreneurship," she said.
Regional Chairman Inshan Ayube said the project comes at a critical time, with the Zeelugt community expanding rapidly through new and older housing schemes.
"So it was of utmost importance that we bring a marketing facility close to your home," he said, noting that residents previously had to rely on markets at Parika and Leonora.
