Fifty healthcare workers graduated on Monday from three specialised training programmes offered by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), marking another step in strengthening the country's healthcare workforce.
The graduation ceremony, held at the National Cultural Centre, celebrated participants who completed training in the Patient Care Assistant (PCA), Operating Room Technician and Orthopaedic Technician programmes.
Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to use the knowledge and practical skills acquired to contribute meaningfully to the delivery of quality healthcare across Guyana.
He underscored the importance of continuously building the capacity of healthcare workers as the Government expands and modernises the public health system, noting that significant investments in infrastructure, technology, specialised services and training are creating greater demand for skilled professionals at all levels of the system.
Dr Anthony reminded the graduates that while technical competence is essential, the delivery of healthcare must also be characterised by compassion, professionalism, respect and a genuine commitment to serving patients. He encouraged them to see their graduation not as the end of their learning journey, but as the beginning of greater opportunities for professional development and service within the health sector.
Key Skill Gaps
The Patient Care Assistant programme equips participants with essential skills to support nurses and other healthcare professionals in providing direct patient care.
The Operating Room Technician programme prepares individuals to function effectively within the surgical environment, supporting operating room teams and contributing to safe and efficient procedures.
The Orthopaedic Technician programme provides specialised training to support the management and care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
The graduation forms part of continued efforts by the Ministry of Health and GPHC to expand the pool of trained healthcare professionals and strengthen the quality and efficiency of services available to patients.
As Guyana's healthcare system continues to undergo significant transformation, the Ministry said it remains committed to investing in human-resource development to ensure healthcare facilities across the country are supported by competent, compassionate and adequately trained professionals.
