Head Teacher Sonia Williams, 51, of the Kildonan Primary School in Region Six, died in an alleged hit-and-run accident at Rose Hall, Corentyne, on Monday afternoon.
Williams, of Chesney Village, had reportedly just left school when she was struck. She was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at approximately 10:30pm.
Her son-in-law, Noah Sills, explained that the family was first alerted to the accident by Williams' older sister, who lives overseas. His wife travelled from Linden while he was already in Georgetown, and the two made their way to New Amsterdam, where they remained with Williams until her death.
Sills noted that Williams had gone to an insurance company in Rose Hall to collect a voucher for her spectacles when the accident occurred.
"And so school concluded. She went to Assuria to pick up her voucher for her glasses. And the accident happened right there, not too long after school had concluded," he said.
According to Sills, Williams appeared to be in severe pain following the accident.
"From what we saw, it appeared she was crying out for pain in the shoulder, pain in the head, pain in the back, pain in the leg," he recalled.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation. Sills added that the family was initially left searching for answers, but Police have since indicated that they may have identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident.
"The police have something they believe might be the vehicle that was involved in the accident. They have someone in custody and so we're waiting on some more information to be able to see more and get some justice," he told Ignite News.
The family is calling for accountability, with Sills hoping the investigation leads to justice for Williams.
"We're honestly hoping for justice for our mother-in-law and for our mother. We're just hoping for justice, just hoping that the law takes its action and the person involved, the person responsible, gets held accountable for his action," he said.
Sills described Williams as a quiet, kind and loving woman known for her caring nature.
"The family is very distraught by our untimely passing. This is not something we foresaw ever happening," he continued. "She's a very loving individual. Her son would say she's a very forgiving individual. She's quiet. She's kind. Anybody that knows Miss Sonia, you know, whatever name you might know her by or as, knows that she's a loving, caring, she's a warm, tender-hearted individual."
Williams' death has left her three children, other relatives and the Kildonan Primary School mourning the loss of an educator who served as its head teacher.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged hit-and-run.
