A 76-year-old contractor died on Thursday after being struck and run over by a reversing truck at an industrial site in Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Gobin Persaud, of Dasrath Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident, which occurred at about 2:45pm, Police in Regional Division #4A said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Persaud was walking in the compound when he reportedly walked behind motor truck GPP 6272, which was reversing at the time. The truck reportedly struck him, causing him to fall, after which the rear wheels ran over him.
An alarm was raised and the truck came to a stop. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned, and Persaud was examined by a doctor on duty, who pronounced him dead.
His body was escorted to a funeral home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
A 22-year-old truck driver of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, is assisting Police with the ongoing investigation.
