A major fire gutted Regent Household Electronics on Regent Street in Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon, sending thick smoke over sections of the city as firefighters battled to contain the blaze.
The fire broke out during peak afternoon hours at the busy commercial property, with emergency crews responding to the scene.
Popular Guyanese singer Lil Million was among those who witnessed the fire. He said he and his partner noticed smoke while they were near Muneshwar’s and followed it to the source.
“We noticed the smoke and followed it until we reached here,” he said, adding that he then went live on TikTok to show what was happening.
Another eyewitness, Durnell Joe, said he assisted firefighters after a hose being used to battle the blaze began leaking.
He helped hold down the damaged section of the hose to reduce the amount of water escaping while firefighters worked to contain the fire.
Ignite News understands that Wednesday’s blaze is the second fire at the Regent Street property, which was previously gutted by fire in 2009.
Regent Household Electronics operates as a retailer of household appliances and electronics in the busy commercial district.
All staff members have been accounted for.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage had not been confirmed as of Wednesday afternoon.
