The Ministry of Housing has commenced engagements with residents occupying an informal settlement along the riverbank at Riverview, Ruimveldt, as part of efforts to address squatting and unregulated settlements.
The initiative follows a commitment made by President Dr Irfaan Ali during a community engagement in the area last month, with Housing Minister Collin Croal visiting the settlement on Tuesday to begin the follow-up process.
Croal was accompanied by Director of Community Development Gladwin Charles and other technical staff from the Ministry.
A release said the Ministry has begun documenting families and structures within the settlement, while one-on-one engagements are under way to gather information and better understand the circumstances of each household.
The information collected will guide the next phase of the initiative, including possible relocation arrangements and interventions to address social issues affecting residents.
Croal said the process will involve collaboration with other Government agencies, including the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, as well as Minister Oneidge Waldron, who has political responsibility for the area.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s wider effort to address squatting and unregulated settlements through solutions such as relocation or regularisation, depending on the circumstances of each community.
Croal reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to a safe, clean and healthy living environment.
