Cleanliness, safety key to visitor experience, says Manickchand

Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand

Cleanliness, accessibility and safety – not just attractions – shape how visitors experience the country, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand said on Monday, as she met with tourism stakeholders to improve conditions across Georgetown and other communities.

Manickchand met with representatives of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) and local tour operators to discuss ways of improving the experience of citizens and visitors in Georgetown and other communities.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the ministry and tourism stakeholders, and identifying practical measures to create a more welcoming experience for persons visiting and moving through the city and other destinations.

Manickchand said the meeting built on an earlier engagement held several months ago, which she jointly convened with Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Susan Rodrigues, as part of ongoing efforts to address matters affecting Guyana’s tourism product.
The discussions also gave tourism operators the opportunity to share their perspectives on areas that could be improved to better serve Guyanese and international visitors.

THAG and the tourism sector were represented by THAG President and Roraima Tours representative Mitra Ramkumar; THAG Vice President and Wilderness Explorers General Manager Carla Vantull; THAG Executive Member and Outdoor Expeditions representative Paul Waldron; Dagron Tours’ Ann Hamilton; and Acting Executive Director/Marketing Coordinator Beaunce Atkinson.

The ministry said it would continue engaging tourism and other private-sector stakeholders as part of its broader effort to strengthen local government services, improve public spaces, and support communities that are attractive and welcoming to both residents and visitors.
