The World Trade Centre Georgetown (WTCG) will host an International Trade and Investment Conference from October 19 to 23, positioning the event as a platform to connect businesses, investors and trade organisations, with particular emphasis on doing business with Brazil, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Executive Director Wesley Kirton said the conference will also draw delegates from World Trade Centres across North America, Latin America and other regions, while helping Guyanese and regional enterprises identify opportunities in international markets.
Kirton said the conference is intended to move beyond discussions about trade and create practical opportunities for businesses to understand what is required to enter and operate in external markets.
“It will focus on doing business with these countries in a number of areas – tourism and hospitality, energy, trading products, agri-business, and we think that the conference will provide an opportunity to look at the synergies that exist among businesses from these countries,” he explained.
Kirton said a key focus will be market access, with sessions examining rules of origin, phytosanitary requirements and other regulatory requirements that can affect exporters.
The conference will also feature a session on the fundamentals of trade research, designed to help businesses understand how to research markets and better prepare to enter new and non-traditional markets.
“We’re also looking at how we provide the opportunity for hands-on training as well for some of the participants in the conference. We’ll be having a session on the fundamentals of trade research, so that people who are exporting or intend to export, whether from Guyana or from Saint Kitts, or from wherever they are, would have an understanding of how to research markets and how to prepare, or better prepare to enter external new markets and non-traditional markets,” Kirton said.
The hands-on training sessions are expected to allow participants to gain practical knowledge that can strengthen their ability to compete internationally.
