Families of victims of the MV Barima tragedy have received more than GYD $75 million in financial support to cover funeral, memorial and wake expenses, the Hope, Empathy, Aid, Resilience and Trust (HEART) Initiative said, as it pushes ahead with nationwide recovery efforts.
The Initiative, led by Lead Coordinator Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Shepherd, continues to advance coordinated support for individuals and families affected by the tragedy.
Officially launched on July 31, 2026 by President Dr Irfaan Ali, the Initiative operates from the Stephen Campbell Building as the central coordinating hub for psychosocial, legal, educational, material, housing and spiritual support. HEART said the Secretariat has to date coordinated assistance for more than 750 affected persons across Regions One through Ten.
HEART said educational support has also been provided, including backpacks with school supplies, along with ongoing food hamper distributions.
On housing and relocation, the Initiative said the Ministry of Housing has approved 20 families for land and turn-key homes, with targeted relocation plans underway for displaced households.
According to HEART, fast-track processes are underway through GECOM, the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority to replace lost national identification cards, passports and driver’s licences. The Attorney General’s Chambers is also providing direct support on probate, estate and guardianship matters.
HEART said assigned social workers and psychologists from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and Ministry of Education are providing Tier 3 and Tier 4 trauma interventions across Regions One, Three, Four, Seven and Nine.
Corporate partners, including the Global Super League (GSL), have provided financial support, while telecommunications resources, including phones, SIM cards and data, have been mobilised to help families stay connected and support the restart of affected businesses, HEART said.
Building on outreaches and follow-ups in Regions Four, Five and Six, the HEART Secretariat is moving into its next phase of community-level assessments and direct interventions.
On Wednesday, the Secretariat will hold a strategic meeting with UNICEF representatives to finalise additional support frameworks.
The legal team will shortly meet with affected family members and representatives in Region Four to provide guidance and assistance on legal matters arising from the tragedy.
The HEART Secretariat said it remains committed to ensuring that support goes beyond the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, providing sustained, compassionate and structured assistance to every survivor, bereaved family and affected community across Guyana.
