Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, 79, has been released on $200,000 station bail as police await legal advice in connection with the fatal accident that claimed the life of 42-year-old Ishwarnauth Bisram, also known as “Ajay.”
Bisram, of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, was struck by motor car PZZ 1906 along the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, at approximately 9:55pm on Saturday.
Police said the vehicle was being driven by Ramayya of Whim Village. According to investigators, Bisram was crossing the roadway when he allegedly walked into the path of the approaching vehicle. The driver reportedly applied the brakes but was unable to avoid the collision.
Bisram sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Bisram’s death has left his family devastated, particularly his three teenage daughters, whom he had been caring for.
His sister, Sandy Bisram, said Bisram had stopped near a Chinese supermarket to purchase food from a roadside vendor and was attempting to cross the road after collecting his purchase when he was struck.
Sandy said she was also disturbed by what she described as the driver’s failure to immediately assist her brother following the collision.
The grieving sister is now calling for justice and questioned the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the speed at which the vehicle was travelling.
She also alleged that the driver had been drinking prior to the accident and said the family had reviewed footage of the collision.
However, a breathalyser test reportedly conducted on the driver recorded 11 micrograms of alcohol, which is below the prescribed legal limit.
Following the accident, Dr Ramayya was taken into police custody and later escorted back to the scene as investigators examined CCTV footage and other evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
The police file has since been sent for legal advice, which is expected to guide investigators on the charges that should be instituted.
Dr Ramayya is a former Regional Executive Officer of Region Six who has been affiliated with several political parties. A former PPP/C supporter, he joined the AFC ahead of the 2015 elections and was later appointed Regional Executive Officer following the APNU+AFC coalition’s victory.
He subsequently returned to the PPP/C before joining WIN ahead of the 2025 elections, where he briefly served as Region Six campaign manager before leaving the party.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Bisram’s death remains ongoing, with police awaiting legal advice before determining the next step in the matter.
