The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) said recent reports of a rupture on the natural gas pipeline supplying the 300 megawatt Gas-to-Energy facility at Wales, West Coast Demerara, are without factual basis.
The pipeline is not currently active and no gas is flowing through it, the agencies said, adding that this rules out any leak or damage of the kind alleged in the reports.
ExxonMobil Guyana has been conducting a scheduled inspection of the subsea pipeline since May 2026, an exercise expected to last about three months and involving five vessels operating along the West Coast of Demerara, the agencies said. MARAD had issued a public notice ahead of the inspection, advising residents and mariners in the area.
The EPA and MARAD said a report concerning the pipeline was received and investigated, with a joint assessment finding the matter to be a slight anomaly. Further inspections are being carried out as a precaution to confirm the pipeline’s continued integrity, in line with standard safety protocols, they said.
The agencies said they remained committed to transparency and to protecting public and environmental safety throughout the Gas-to-Energy Project, and urged the public to verify facts through official channels before drawing conclusions that could cause unnecessary alarm among West Coast Demerara residents.
