The local education community is mourning the death of veteran educator Sharon Chapman, a respected teacher and school leader.
In a Facebook tribute, the Ministry of Education said Chapman’s career spanned several decades.
Her teaching career took her to Mabura Hill Primary, St. Sidwell’s Primary and St. Agnes Primary before she joined Sophia Primary School, where she was appointed Graduate Senior Mistress in 2018.
Following the retirement of the school’s headteacher in 2025, Chapman assumed leadership of Sophia Primary, guiding the school until her retirement from the position in August this year.
Chapman was remembered as a firm and principled leader who demanded discipline, accountability and high standards while remaining deeply committed to the welfare and development of pupils and teachers.
The Ministry said Chapman was known for encouraging excellence among both pupils and staff and for taking seriously her responsibility to help those in her care reach their full potential.
“Behind her firmness was a compassionate woman who cared deeply for those entrusted to her,” the Ministry said in a tribute.
Beyond her years in education, Chapman was described as a devoted wife, loving mother of three children and caring grandmother of two.
Her contribution to education, and the many lives shaped by her service, will be remembered with gratitude and admiration, the Ministry said.
