Woman, 93, dies in West La Penitence fire

A 93-year-old woman, Rosa Singh, died today after a fire tore through a two-storey wooden building at Lot 36 Costella Housing Scheme, West La Penitence, Georgetown.

The Guyana Fire Service said ranks from the Headquarters Fire Station arrived to find the building fully engulfed in flames and immediately began firefighting operations to contain and extinguish the blaze.

During the emergency response, one occupant was reported unaccounted for. Following suppression of the fire, firefighters conducted a search of the premises and discovered the charred remains of the missing occupant, later identified as Singh.

The Guyana Fire Service extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

Investigations into the cause and circumstances of the fire are ongoing.
