Rose Hall Town man dies in motorcycle collision

A 27-year-old man from Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, lost his life on Wednesday evening following a motorcycle collision along the Mibicuri Public Road in Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice.

The deceased has been identified as Jermaine Smart, who was riding motorcycle CP 1482 at the time of the accident, which occurred at approximately 18:30 hrs.

According to police investigations, Smart was travelling west along the Mibicuri Public Road when he collided with another motorcycle ridden by a 14-year-old student of Mibicuri Secondary School from Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder.

Investigators reported that the teenager was travelling in the opposite direction, proceeding east along the roadway, allegedly without the motorcycle’s headlamp illuminated.

The impact of the collision caused both riders to be thrown onto the roadway, leaving them unconscious. Public-spirited citizens rushed to their assistance and transported them to the Mibicuri Public Hospital for treatment.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Smart succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. His body has since been taken to a funeral home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The teenager later regained consciousness and was examined by the doctor on duty. Owing to the seriousness of his injuries, he was transferred to the No. 75 Public Hospital, where he remains a patient in the emergency unit. His condition has been listed as serious.

Police said one of the motorcycles involved in the crash has been lodged at the Mibicuri Police Station for examination. Efforts to locate the second motorcycle have so far been unsuccessful.

Investigations into the fatal accident are continuing.
