Norton: APNU’s GECOM seats permanent until death or resignation

APNU leader Aubrey Nor

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Chairman Aubrey Norton has rejected calls for the party to give up its seats on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), saying the law guarantees its commissioners permanent posts.
Norton made the comments on the KAMS TV podcast last week.

“No one has the authority to remove them. If they resign or die then they can be replaced, but as presently structured, the law is very clear it’s a permanent commission and those commissioners are there for life,” Norton said.

APNU lost its position as main opposition to the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIIN) party in last year’s General and Regional Elections. Its three GECOM representatives — Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman — have continued to hold their posts.

WIIN leader Azruddin Mohamed has written to APNU and the Forward Guyana Movement requesting a meeting to nominate new GECOM commissioners.

Norton maintained the law does not require the APNU commissioners to step down, adding that GECOM remains fully functional and legally constituted.
