Three young men die in Corentyne accident

Three young men lost their lives on Tuesday afternoon following a horrific head-on collision along the Madia Farm Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead are 19-year-old Ameer Khan of John Village, Corentyne, who was driving motor car PLL 4312; 23-year-old Priyas Mursalin of Lot 8 Chesney Front, Corentyne; and 16-year-old Porshatam Hoolasia of Lot 29 Haswell, Port Mourant. Mursalin and Hoolasia were passengers in the vehicle.
According to police investigations, the accident occurred at approximately 15:30 hrs and involved motor car PLL 4312 and motor car PAL 9292, owned by the Roman Catholic Bishop Church and driven by 44-year-old Ramesh Aravanan of Miss Phoebe, Corentyne.
Preliminary investigations revealed that motor car PAL 9292 was proceeding west along the southern driving lane at a normal rate of speed, while motor car PLL 4312 was travelling east at what police described as a fast rate of speed.
Police said Khan reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and entered the path of the oncoming motor car, resulting in a violent head-on collision on the southern side of the roadway. The impact caused PLL 4312 to veer off the road and crash into a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) utility pole.
Both drivers and the passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
However, Khan, Mursalin and Hoolasia were pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
Their bodies were later transferred to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where they are awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Aravanan received medical treatment and was subsequently discharged from the hospital.
Police also administered a breathalyser test on Aravanan, which returned a reading of zero alcohol.
Aravanan remains in police custody as investigations continue.
