A 4-year-old child died after a motor car overturned several times along the St Cuthbert’s Mission Trail, Mahaica River, East Coast Demerara, at about 17:30 hrs on Sunday, Police said in a release.
Motor car PAJ 5607, owned and driven by a 28-year-old welder of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was also carrying a 24-year-old woman and the four-year-old, both of the same address, when the incident occurred.
Police said the driver was heading west along the trail when an approaching vehicle travelling at speed threw up a cloud of dust that obstructed his vision. He alleged that another car then entered his lane, forcing him to swerve to avoid a collision, after which he lost control and the vehicle overturned several times.
All three occupants were injured and taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver and the woman were treated and discharged.
The child’s body has been taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination. Police ranks visited and examined the scene.
The driver is in custody, assisting with the investigation. Further details will be provided as the probe continues.
