Slowing down, combating stress and reconnecting through yoga

In an age defined by constant connectivity, rising workloads and the pressures of daily life, many people are quietly struggling to keep pace.

For some, the demands of modern life are no longer just stressful—they are overwhelming. It is against this backdrop that wellness practices such as yoga are gaining renewed relevance, offering not just physical exercise, but a pathway to mental clarity and emotional recovery.

At Temple Street, Ogle, East Coast Demerara, the Namaste Yoga Studio has become one such space where residents are learning to slow down and breathe again.

Since opening its doors in 2022, the studio has been steadily building a community around the idea of balance—one stretch at a time.

Founder and instructor Agnela Patil did not arrive at yoga by chance. An engineering graduate by training, she later pursued a bachelor’s degree in yoga from Nashik University in Maharashtra, India, and is now in the final stages of her master’s degree programme.

Her transition reflects a growing global recognition of yoga not only as a form of exercise, but as a structured approach to health and well-being.

“The need for yoga in this modern world has been growing recently, with the amount of stress and workload in this digital environment that the world is heading into. Yoga is not just about physical fitness; it also brings mental fitness and mental strength,” Patil said.

Just two months ago, she expanded her operations by opening a new studio space to accommodate growing interest. Group sessions, she said, have become particularly meaningful—not only for their physical benefits, but for the sense of connection they create among participants.

“Yoga is not just physical stretches. Of course, it benefits physical health, but it also has a lot to do with mental health,” she explained, adding that people going through stress and difficult times in their lives do find a way to calm themselves—dealing with anxiety through yoga.

Her comments underscore a reality often left unspoken: for many, wellness spaces are becoming informal lifelines in managing emotional strain.

Patil believes yoga’s value extends far beyond the studio, shaping how individuals respond to everyday pressures. She continues to encourage participation from people of all ages and backgrounds, emphasising accessibility and inclusivity.

Her perspective is reinforced by global health authorities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), yoga offers wide-ranging benefits for physical, mental and social well-being. It is recognised for reducing stress, anxiety and emotional strain while improving mental clarity and emotional balance.

Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of the World Health Organization South-East Asia Region, also highlights its role in improving flexibility, strength, posture and overall fitness, while supporting cardiovascular and respiratory health.

Importantly, Singh notes that yoga can help prevent and manage non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease by encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing physical inactivity.

Beyond the physical, WHO emphasises yoga’s ability to activate the body’s relaxation response, lowering heart rate and supporting recovery and resilience. Accessible across all ages and backgrounds, it is increasingly viewed as a tool for lifelong health and improved quality of life.
