A tragic accident along the Lesbeholden Public Road, Black Bush Polder, on Wednesday afternoon claimed the lives of a father and his young son after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a canal.
Dead are 32-year-old Joseph Mangar and four-year-old Johnathan Mangar, both of Limlair Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to police, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 13:50 hrs and involved motor car PYY 2317, which was being driven by Joseph Mangar.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the car was travelling south along the Lesbeholden Public Road at a reportedly high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car subsequently veered off the roadway and ended up in a canal on the western side of the road, where it became submerged.
Public-spirited citizens quickly responded and managed to remove both occupants from the submerged vehicle. They were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital for medical attention.
However, despite efforts to save them, both Joseph Mangar and the four-year-old child were pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.
The bodies were later taken to a funeral home, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident are ongoing.
