Skeldon set for large-scale cocoa production by August, Mustapha says

Large-scale cocoa production is expected to begin in Skeldon by August as the government advances discussions with international investors and local farmers.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha made the announcement during a recent meeting with farmers at Crabwood Creek on the Corentyne, Berbice, where he outlined plans to expand cocoa cultivation in Region Six.

He noted that a cocoa producer from the Dominican Republic is preparing to establish operations in Skeldon, including a processing plant and about 2,000 acres of cocoa cultivation.

“Very shortly, one of the largest cocoa farmers in the world, the Rizek Group from the Dominican Republic, will come here in Skeldon to start production of cocoa.

They will set up a processing plant… work along with local farmers, provide planting material and technical guidance,” Mustapha stated.

He explained that soil samples from the proposed cultivation area were sent to the Dominican Republic for testing as discussions continue between both sides.

“We have been in constant contact with them, and I am very optimistic that by or before August they can begin planting here,” he added.

The proposed investment is expected to diversify agricultural production in the Corentyne area, create opportunities for farmers and strengthen agro-processing activities in Region Six.
