GPL warns against illegal signs on electricity poles

Guyana Power and Light on Tuesday reminded citizens and business owners that it is illegal to place signs and other obstructions on electricity poles, warning that such actions can interfere with the safe maintenance and operation of the country’s power network.

In a notice, GPL said it is hazardous to erect, attach or install any structure, sign, banner, wire, advertisement, cable or other object on its poles and electrical infrastructure.

The company said unauthorized attachments can disrupt the safe operation of the electricity system, damage infrastructure and pose serious public safety risks, including electrocution or death.

GPL said Section 5.4 of the company’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Electric Services requires customers to avoid placing structures that interfere with the safe operation of or access to the company’s facilities.

It warned that persons found engaging in unauthorized activities involving its infrastructure could face prosecution under the law.

GPL also urged members of the public to report unauthorized attachments or unsafe activities near the electricity network by contacting its Call Centre on 226-2600 or via WhatsApp on 608-9090.
