Students of Sophia Primary School are now benefiting from an expanded and upgraded learning environment following the commissioning of a new school wing aimed at reducing overcrowding and improving classroom conditions.
The $233 million project added nine classrooms, a headteacher’s office, two washroom blocks, and an auditorium, significantly expanding the school’s capacity and improving its overall infrastructure.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Education Minister Sonia Parag urged students to care for the new facility and make full use of the opportunities being provided through improved access to education.
“You are the ones who have to leave the legacy for the next generation. Therefore, you have to treat this facility with care and with consideration,” Parag told students.
She also stressed the importance of personal responsibility in education, encouraging students to pay close attention in class and take an active role in their learning.
Parag said the project forms part of the government’s wider efforts to improve access to quality education across Guyana. She noted that more than 100 schools have been built or are currently under construction nationwide over the past five years.
The additional space is expected to significantly ease overcrowding at the school, creating a more comfortable and conducive environment for learning while supporting students’ academic and personal development.
