The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) extends warm greetings to all Guyanese on the observance of Arrival Day 2026, a significant national occasion that invites reflection on the journeys, sacrifices, and enduring legacy of the many peoples who came to Guyana’s shores and shaped our nation’s rich and diverse identity.

Observed on May 5, this occasion also marks the anniversary of the arrival of the first East Indian indentured labourers to Guyana in 1838, following Emancipation and the end of slavery.

Arrival Day, however, speaks to the wider historical journey of the many peoples whose presence and contributions have shaped our nation, including our African brothers and sisters, whose resilience, labour, and sacrifice during the painful period of enslavement helped lay the foundations of Guyana, as well as the Portuguese, who arrived in 1835, the Chinese in 1853, and other ethnic groups who came in the years thereafter.

Equally significant are the enduring contributions of our First Peoples—our Indigenous brothers and sisters—who were here long before and remain an integral part of Guyana’s identity, heritage, and national story.

Arrival Day therefore stands as a tribute to the resilience, perseverance, and sacrifices of our foreparents, whose cultures, traditions, faiths, and values continue to enrich Guyana and strengthen our collective identity.

Arrival Day also reaffirms the strength of Guyana’s plurality. The convergence of cultures, faiths, and traditions has created a unique Guyanese identity rooted in mutual respect, shared heritage, and tolerance.

The Commission encourages all citizens to continue embracing this diversity as a foundation for unity, understanding, and peaceful coexistence, while honouring the contributions of those who came before us.Happy Arrival Day!
