Toka Village in Region Nine has won the Community-Based Tourism Award at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Sustainable Tourism Awards 2026, in recognition of its locally driven tourism model centred on cultural preservation and community participation.

The CTO said the award highlights the strength of community-led tourism development and the creation of authentic, sustainable visitor experiences.

Judges praised the village’s strong community ownership through the Toka Tourism Committee and Village Council, as well as its development of signature experiences and a sustainable income system that includes pottery and culinary tourism.

Particular recognition was given to the involvement of elders and women in preserving traditional knowledge, alongside growing youth participation in cultural activities.

Tourism Minister Susan Rodrigues said the award reflects the country’s commitment to inclusive tourism and economic empowerment, describing Toka as an example of pride and cultural preservation.

Guyana Tourism Authority Director Kamrul Baksh said the village demonstrates how communities can successfully lead tourism development while maintaining authenticity.

The initiative was developed with support from the Guyana Tourism Authority, Visit Rupununi, and Conservation International-Guyana.
