A 33-year-old taxi driver died on Tuesday night after his car crashed into a lamp post and a tree along the Cullen Public Road on the Essequibo Coast.

The victim was identified as Floyd Ricardo Mal of Lot 79, Huist Dierent. The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on a section of the road known for a right-hand bend.

Mal was driving motor car HD 8678, owned by Yonette Sargeant of Pomona, and was proceeding south along the eastern lane when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle. Reports indicate that the road surface was dry and in good condition, with streetlights functioning at the time.

The vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway and collided with a lamp post, then a signboard, before striking a tree. Residents responded and pulled Mal from the wreckage before he was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at about 10:35 p.m. while receiving treatment.
Police officers who visited the scene have launched an investigation.

The body was identified by his wife, Sherika Mal, and taken to the Suddie Public Hospital mortuary. A post-mortem examination is pending.

The vehicle remains at the scene as authorities continue their inquiries into the circumstances of the crash.
