Two passengers were detained on Thursday after authorities discovered a quantity of yellow metal suspected to be raw gold during screening at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, police said.
The metal was found in the carry-on luggage of a 62-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, both Guyanese-Canadian citizens, who were due to depart for Toronto, Canada.
Customs officials reported the discovery and detained the pair for further processing. The material, weighing 15.521 ounces, was measured in their presence and secured, according to police.
Investigations are ongoing.
