Vendors operating under the canopy at the Stabroek Market will be temporarily relocated to facilitate rehabilitation works on the structure, Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentore said on Wednesday.
Mentore made the announcement during an engagement with vendors, explaining that the relocation is part of a collaborative project between the Mayor and City Council and the central government to carry out maintenance at the market.
The works will include sandblasting and repairs to sections of the market’s roof, which require access to the area beneath the canopy where vendors typically operate.
According to the mayor, the relocation will be implemented in two phases and is expected to last a few weeks to minimise disruption to vendors’ livelihoods.
Under the first phase, vendors operating on the northern side of the canopy will temporarily move to the roadway near the market entrance. Vendors who prefer not to operate along the roadway may suspend operations for about a week while works are carried out in that section.
Once the initial phase is completed, vendors operating from the entrance area to the southern end of the canopy will be temporarily relocated while rehabilitation works continue.
Mentore acknowledged that the relocation may cause inconvenience but said the works are necessary to improve conditions at the market.
“Anytime for you to get success or betterment, there will be some inconvenience. At the end of the day, you will have a better place to sell,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of vendors to the city’s economy, noting that vending plays a significant role in supporting livelihoods and the wider business community.
“This job itself will take a couple of weeks. Vending is important. It’s a very important aspect of people contributing to the economy. So we want to work with vendors as vendors work with us,” Mentore said.
Vendors experiencing challenges during the relocation period were encouraged to communicate with market authorities and project supervisors so that concerns can be addressed promptly
