Guyanese companies are securing greater shares in the delivery of offshore and downstream services due to their continued development of technical skills and engineering expertise within the oil and gas industry.
This is according to Bobby Gossai, Senior Petroleum Co-ordinator at the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Speaking at the recently concluded Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, he noted that over 2,000 Guyanese companies are now directly employed within the oil and gas sector, many providing more than basic services.
“These companies go far beyond merely providing janitorial or catering services; they are now involved in the business application of machining, offering office space rental, supplying the manpower required for these operations, and increasingly engaging in technical and engineering activities within the offshore sector,” Gossai said.
He added that as the delivery of gas onshore nears reality, Guyanese companies are leveraging their technical capabilities to add value through the development of the upcoming gas bottling plant, which will serve both local and regional markets, as well as the fertiliser and ammonia plant to support the agriculture industry, and the provision of cheaper energy to stimulate the heavy manufacturing and industrialisation sectors.
Gossai emphasised that the current intention is for heavy equipment and products relevant to the sector to be produced locally, reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
“Whether it’s the tourism industry, the agriculture sector, or the mining sector, we want to be able to produce these products here in Guyana. This is the direction we are taking with the downstream sector,” the co-ordinator stated.
He added that the advancement of domestic skillsets and expertise has driven the country to further develop legislation and policies that attract investment while securing meaningful local ownership and employment, ensuring that the oil and gas sector is not only sustainable but also evolves economically for the benefit of Guyanese.
