The holy month of Ramadan will begin in Guyana on Thursday after the crescent moon was not sighted on Tuesday evening, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) said in a statement.

The organisation said reports received locally and from across the region confirmed that the moon marking the start of the Islamic month was not visible after sunset on February 17. As a result, the first night of Ramadan will be observed on Wednesday, February 18, with fasting commencing the following day.

The CIOG encouraged Muslims across the country to gather at their respective masjids on Wednesday evening to welcome the sacred month and participate in prayers marking the start of Ramadan.

It also said moon-sighting reports may be submitted to its office, supported by photographic evidence and witness confirmation, as part of the traditional verification process used to determine the beginning of the observance.

Ramadan is one of the most significant periods in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, increase prayer and charity, and engage in reflection and community activities.

The CIOG said enquiries regarding moon sightings and related matters can be directed to its offices through its official communication channels.
