Educational opportunities for residents of Wakenaam and Leguan are being significantly expanded with the rollout of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) and the Guyana Digital School programmes.
Recently, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag, and representatives of GOAL and the Guyana Digital School visited Wakenaam to follow up on a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to broaden access to tertiary and digital education for residents of the island.
During the visit, Minister Parag engaged directly with students and individuals currently pursuing higher education as they voiced their concerns, providing clarity on a range of academic opportunities available through the programmes.
“The Guyana Online Academy of Learning has surpassed its target of 20,000 scholarships in just three years. It tells you that the thing that the people were asking for – they wanted the opportunity, they got the opportunity, they took the opportunity,” she said.
The outreach forms part of a wider push to ensure equitable access to education, particularly for residents in hinterland and riverain communities who have traditionally faced barriers to tertiary studies due to geography and cost.
Through GOAL and the Guyana Digital School, residents are now able to access accredited programmes and technical training remotely, while receiving structured support throughout their academic journey.
The outreach continued on the Essequibo island of Leguan, where residents were briefed on the extensive educational options offered under both initiatives.
Members of the outreach team provided expert advice, guidance, and hands-on assistance, including support with the registration process, to ensure interested applicants could enroll seamlessly.
